I grew up in North Salt Lake. It is the first city you hit heading north out of Salt Lake City, and it shares a border with it, which is why people so often call it “North Salt Lake City.” It is its own city, though, officially the City of North Salt Lake, and it is the closest Davis County address to downtown.

The layout

North Salt Lake is bordered by Salt Lake City to the south, Woods Cross to the north and Bountiful to the northeast. It covers about 8.6 square miles, and it really splits into two parts.

The east side climbs the hillside, with neighborhoods like Eaglewood looking out over the whole valley. The west side, below Redwood Road and out toward Legacy Parkway, is flatter and much newer, including Foxboro.

Getting around

Commute is what sells North Salt Lake. I-15, US-89 and Legacy Parkway all run through or right beside it, and downtown Salt Lake City is just over the border to the south. That matters more than it sounds: only a handful of roads connect Davis County to Salt Lake County through the gap between the lake and the mountains, and North Salt Lake sits right at the south end of it.

Around town

North Salt Lake is mostly residential, so a lot of shopping happens in Bountiful or Salt Lake. Locally:

  • Lee’s Marketplace: the main grocery store, on Redwood Road
  • Our Kitchen Café and Janet’s Sunshine Café: two breakfast spots with a big local following
  • Sukihana: Japanese, also on Redwood Road
  • Mrs. Cavanaugh’s Chocolates: chocolate and ice cream, with a shop in North Salt Lake

Parks and trails

  • Tunnel Springs Park: up on the hill off Eaglepointe Drive
  • Wild Rose Trailhead Park: a trailhead into the foothills
  • Foxboro North Regional Park and Legacy Park: the big fields and playgrounds on the west side
  • Legacy Parkway Trail: a paved trail running north along the parkway

The hillside question

Some of the hillside here has a documented landslide history, including the Parkway Drive landslide, which is publicly mapped. This is not a reason to avoid the city. It is a reason to check the specific address rather than assume.

I pull the mapped hazard data for any address a client is serious about, and I will tell you plainly what it does and does not say. Commute-driven buyers and view-driven buyers also price differently, and the best offer for a seller usually depends on which one your home attracts.

Useful local reference: Utah Geological Survey — Parkway Drive landslide.
