Centerville is a small South Davis County city between Bountiful and Farmington, about 15 minutes north of downtown Salt Lake City. It’s also where I work every day. My office is right by the movie theater just west of the train tracks, so these are the streets I know best.

The layout

Centerville isn’t a huge city. You can get from one side to the other in about 10 minutes at most, and a freeway overpass connects the east and west sides, so you never have to wait on a train to get across.

Nearly all of Centerville’s homes are east of the freeway and the railroad tracks. The west side is mostly commercial: the movie theater, some condos and apartment buildings. If you’re looking at a house in Centerville, you’re almost certainly looking east of the freeway.

Part of the South Davis County search

Farmington sits just north of Centerville, and a lot of buyers search both. It’s all considered South Davis County, so Centerville, Farmington, Bountiful, West Bountiful, Woods Cross and North Salt Lake tend to land in the same search. When people are looking for homes in this area, that’s the target.

Commute times

  • Downtown Salt Lake City: about 15 minutes
  • Salt Lake City International Airport: about 20 minutes
  • Ogden: 25 to 30 minutes
  • Utah County: 50 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic

A lot of people in Centerville work downtown, and the afternoon drive back north is very doable. I-15 does get congested, but most of that traffic keeps going north toward Ogden after you exit at Centerville, so you’re not sitting in it for long. Some people commute as far north as Ogden or even Brigham City, about an hour away, and some drive south to Provo. You can work just about anywhere along the Wasatch Front from here.

Shopping and dining

The big stores in Centerville are Walmart, Target and Kohl’s. As for restaurants, if you’re a big foodie, you’re not moving to Centerville for the food. It’s mostly chains: Chick-fil-A, McDonald’s, In-N-Out, Tonyburger and a few others.

Parks

Centerville has a few parks. The biggest is Centerville Community Park, which hosts football, baseball and soccer. Our office hosts two events there every year: an egg hunt in the spring and a pumpkin patch in the fall, where we give out pumpkins.

Homes and prices

Housing in Centerville is pretty diverse:

  • Entry level: condos and smaller townhomes right off the freeway, popular with first-time homebuyers and people who are downsizing
  • Average: I’d say you’re looking at $600,000 to $700,000
  • Top end: multimillion-dollar homes

Centerville is a little more expensive because it’s closer to downtown Salt Lake. If you want a bigger, nicer home for less money, you can get a better deal by moving further north. You trade price for a longer commute.
