I live in Bountiful now. Growing up, I lived in North Salt Lake, and my grandparents lived in Bountiful, kind of in the downtown area. We were always driving to Grandma and Grandpa’s house, so I have a lot of fond memories of Bountiful.

The layout

Bountiful is just a couple of cities north of Salt Lake City. One city north of Salt Lake is North Salt Lake, which is its own city, not just the northern part of Salt Lake. Just after North Salt Lake, heading north, you’ve got Bountiful. West of Bountiful are Woods Cross and West Bountiful.

The older part of Bountiful is east of I-15. The city started on the flatter ground and gradually worked its way up the foothills and higher into the mountain. Look up on the hill and you’ll see a huge “B” for Bountiful.

Main Street and around town

Main Street is kind of quaint, with little boutiques and shops along it. Near Main Street there’s an outdoor ice rink called the Ice Ribbon.

The city also has a recreation center where a lot of people from the area go. It has basketball courts, a gym, racquetball courts and another ice rink.

Back in the day, there was an area called Five Points, named for the five roads that came together there. There used to be a mall at Five Points, but they tore it down, and now it’s a center with health facilities, chiropractors and other businesses.

Bountiful also has a Costco. It came in maybe 15 to 20 years ago and is very well established now. If you live in South Davis County, there’s a good chance you’ll use the Bountiful Costco, because the next one north is up around Ogden.

Where to eat

  • Blacksmith Ice Cream: a big draw over the last few years. They make custom ice cream, and even though it’s a small shop, a lot of people go there. They even have lactose-free options. If you visit Bountiful and you like ice cream, make sure you go.
  • The Mandarin: a Chinese restaurant that’s a little off the beaten path. It’s very popular and often crowded. If you like Chinese food, or American-style Chinese food, you’d probably enjoy it.
  • Nielsen’s Frozen Custard: I believe the Bountiful location may have been the first one. They serve hamburgers and fries too, with kind of an old-style diner feel, but they’re known for the custard.

I have a small story about the Mandarin. I remember being home one day when my dad came in with a napkin that had a signature on it. I asked him who it was, and he said, “This is Dr. J.” I was young and didn’t know who Dr. J was, so he explained it to me, and that’s how we ended up with Dr. J’s signature on a napkin at our house.

Views and sunsets

As you go farther east and up onto the hill, you get great views. Some people call these areas the foothills of Davis County. Looking west, you can see Antelope Island, a state park in the Great Salt Lake. There are a lot of buffalo out there, and you can drive onto the island and see them.

From the hills in Bountiful, you look out over the island and get some great sunsets. I’ve even seen publications mention this area as having some of the best sunsets around.

Homes and prices

  • Near Main Street: often roughly $500,000 to $600,000. These are generally older homes, but they have a lot of character: red brick, sometimes white picket fences, and a lot of them remodeled or refurbished inside.
  • Partway up the hill: around $600,000 is closer to the lower end, and homes around $900,000 are fairly common, depending on the part of Bountiful
  • Higher on the east side: $1 million to $3 million. You generally won’t find much above $2 or $3 million, though every once in a while there’s an exception. About a year ago I listed a very custom home on a large lot that was close to $4 million.
  • Apartments and condos: there are some, though not a huge number

As you move farther east there are some newer homes, but for the most part Bountiful is pretty built out. There isn’t a lot of land left to build on. That’s different from western North Salt Lake, West Bountiful or west Farmington, where there’s been more land for new construction. Every so often a farmer or landowner here will sell a piece of land, but buildable land is getting harder to find.

Useful local reference: Antelope Island State Park.
